10 Tips on How to Photograph Beautiful Photos of Your Kids while Home!
We have moved into uncharted territory over the past few weeks. With schools closing, events canceled and the urge for all of us to be out as little as possible and avoiding contact with friends and family. I have to believe we are all looking for ways to support one another and make the best out of the situation we all find our selves in.
I have been trying to think of ways to help, and since photography is such a large part of who I am, this is how I can best help. You may be home with your kids and looking for something to do to pass a half-hour of the time. Maybe you had planned a trip to see their grandparents, but it had to be canceled. Now is a great time to capture some beautiful, candid, and sweet photos of your family and kids. We might not be able to see each other right now, but we can share great photos with friends and family and bring a smile to their face during this stressful time. When was the last time you took the time to capture a great photo of your child? Now is a perfect time : )
I have compiled a list of tips to help you capture the best possible photographs and you don’t need a fancy camera. The one on your phone can take beautiful photographs with the right light and a few helpful tips : )
Photography should be fun, so get out into your backyard play on the swings, look for flowers coming up in the garden, take a walk in the woods, maybe have your kids pick out fun outfits that they want to be photographed in, or capture baking cookies together to share with grandma. Be creative and I am sure you will be glad you took the time to capture some beautiful photos of your kiddos and family. Below are 5 Tips for taking great indoor photographs!
5 Tips for Indoor Photos:
- When photographing your kids or babies, find the place in your house with the best window light. This could be a sunroom, large window in your family room, or maybe in front of your large sliding glass door.
- Don’t have your child stand in front of the window. Doing this will create a blown-out background while your kid is dark and in shadow. Instead, Have them stand to the side and turn their face towards the window (light). This placement will cast beautiful light on them.
- The second option is for you to stand in front of the widow, and they face you. This will create beautiful, even light on them.
- Once you have them in great light. Try getting down on their level. It will add variety, and it is nice not always to have them looking up at you : )
- Lastly, you might think it is a good idea to turn on all the lights to add brightness to your photo. This will create a weird color cast, though. Photographers call it “mixed-light.” Instead, turn off side lamps and over-head lights and use the window light we talked about : )
- Ps. I am sorry about the terrible drawings but I wanted to get this post up quickly for you : )
Outdoor Photos with your Kids
Even though we should all be staying at home when possible, it doesn’t mean you can’t go outside and play in the yard, go waking on a nearby trail, or at least enjoy the sunshine on your front porch. Photographing your kids should be fun, so do something you enjoy together and capture it!
Below are some great tips for getting the most out of your outdoor photos and some photos for inspiration : )
5 Tips for Great Outdoor Photos:
- Make it fun for your kids. Maybe have them find a favorite rock to show you. Look for birds that are returning this time of year. Play on the swingset or draw with sidewalk chalk on the driveway. Getting kids in action doing something they enjoy will always lead to real smiles.
- Try the portrait mode on your camera. Portrait mode is designed to take great portraits, so don’t be afraid to play with the settings on your phone camera.
- The best time of day for photos outside on a sunny day is two hours before sunset at “Golden Hour.” The light early in the morning or in the evening is soft and flattering light, especially for kids.
- If you are outside in the middle of the day, look for “open shade.” Open shade means you are standing in the shade, but when you look up you can see the sky : )
- And again, get down on their level. You don’t always want to be looking down at your kids while you are taking their photos!
- And if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ASK!
I hope you can make the most of this time with your family and share your photos with family and friends. I am sure it will light up their day seeing a photo of someone they love! Please share this on your Facebook or social media and spread this post!
The picture above is a good example of early morning light. Have the light be hitting the back of your child’s head. This will create that beautiful “glow”
Printing Your Photographs
Last but not least, now that you have taken these great photos, don’t leave them on your phone! Print them to put in an album, hang on the fridge or frame them for the mantle. Your photos deserve to be printed! Bay Photo and Artifact Uprising are great print companies and will do a better job than CVS or Walmart. There are also apps to easily print your photos from your phone and even offer FREE PRINTS! Try out the Snapfish and Shutterfly apps.
If you have any questions please don’t be afraid to reach out and stay safe but enjoy this time together.

A New Year’s Eve Wedding at the Canfield Casino
A Romantic Canfield Casino New Year’s Eve Wedding
Canfield Casino New Year’s Wedding is such an amazing celebration for a wedding. I was thrilled when Mary Kate and Cristian reached out about photographing their wedding day. Saratoga Springs is one of my favorite upstate NY towns. The Canfield Casino is one of the most beautiful venues in Saratoga. Their wedding was classic and timeless but infused with so much fun. It truly was one of my favorite weddings to be a part of.
Canfield Casino New Year’s Wedding is already an event to remember, but it becomes a true story of romance and elegance when it’s held at such a historic building.
The Canfield Casino is a stunning venue located in the heart of Saratoga Springs, New York. The historic building was built in the 1800s and is known for its intricate architecture and beautiful gardens. The Canfield Casino has been a popular venue for weddings for many years, and it’s easy to see why. The building’s charm and elegance make it the perfect place to start your new life together as Husband and Wife.
The bride wore a classic white wedding gown paired with Manolo Blahniks and a lace cathedral-length veil. The groom was dressed in a sharp black tuxedo. Their timeless style was the perfect match for the elegant surroundings. The bride’s bouquet of white roses adds a touch of natural beauty to the already stunning venue. The wedding flowers designed by Fleurtascious Designs of Saratoga throughout the venue were stunning. Soft light and candlelight created a warm and inviting experience from the minute guests walked inside for cocktail hour. The couple had chosen a color scheme of white and gold with disco balls throughout to make sure it felt like the party it was!
A Reception with a Live Band and Fireworks
As the night went on, the couple danced to the sound of a live band, surrounded by friends and family. The wedding guests were even surprised by an amazing fireworks display from the balcony.
Despite the rainy weather outside, the bride and groom’s wedding day at the Canfield Casino was a truly unforgettable event. Their classic style and the elegance of the venue made for a stunning celebration of love and commitment. This New Year’s Eve wedding was the perfect start to a new chapter in their lives, filled with love, happiness, and timeless memories.

A Saratoga National Luxury Spring Garden Wedding
A Saratoga National spring wedding that was as beautiful as it sounds. Memorial Day weekend is the start of the wedding season in upstate New York. I could not have imagined a better wedding than Adele and Luke’s at the Saratoga National Golf Course.
Their wedding day was filled with joy, love, and incredible energy, but there was also remembrance and gratitude for those now resting in honored glory. Captain Luke Miller and Adele truly found ways to honor those who had served and given the ultimate sacrifice.
Their beautiful spring wedding started with the ceremony at Saint John’s church in Schenectady, NY. Saint John’s was one of the most magnificent churches I have been fortunate to photograph ceremonies in. The architecture and domed ceiling were stunning. But what was really beautiful was the two people saying their vows. I love beautiful details and gorgeous spaces, but what I love the most are the moments that make up the wedding day. And seeing Luke and Adele be so present and excited about exchanging their vows was magical.
The Wedding Reception
After the ceremony, we made our way to the equally gorgeous Saratoga National Golf Course. The Saratoga National wedding venue truly has it all. The vision that Kelly Strong Events brought to fruition for Adele, Luke, and their families is was beyond breathtaking. Adele had envisioned a garden-inspired wedding reception that was romantic and fresh. The team at Renaissance Floral Design truly worked their magic in creating a space that took your breath away.
In the words of Adele, “Romantic, Patriotic, Partyyyyyy” was the inspiration, and I think that was exactly their wedding day.
Heartfelt speeches, a beautiful sunset, fireworks lit up the sky, and dancing into the night rounded out the night. I don’t think anything could have been added to make a more memorable day for Adele and Luke. Thank you to the amazing team below for making their Saratoga National Spring Wedding a success.

Luxury Summer Lake Wedding in the ADK
An Upstate New York Wedding at Family Camp on Long Lake
Is there anything more special than having your wedding at your family’s Adirondack camp? Danae and Russ had the most amazing summer lake wedding on the shores of Long Lake in the Adirondacks. Danae and Russ had to pivot their wedding with COVID, and they did it with grace. I loved that they chose Danae’s family’s lake house in the heart of the Adirondacks.
Their day was so incredibly special. Danae and Russ were able to get ready at the neighboring private great camp. Each floor of the camp had charming and warm interiors that matched the feel of the morning so beautifully. One of my favorite photos is of Danae getting into her wedding dress with her mom. The bride’s gorgeous Jimmy Choos are proof that you can have a mix of elegant luxury and Adirondack charm on your wedding day.
Danae and Russ had their first look on the front lawn of the great camp. We then walked down to the water for portraits on the dock before the ceremony. The fresh smell of pine and the crisp breeze off the water was the perfect touch to the lake ceremony. I loved the intimate feel of their wedding with only their closest family and friends in attendance. A summer lake wedding is such a classic Adirondack vibe that it will always feel effortless.
What makes a summer lake wedding in the Adirondack even more special? How about a sunset boat cruise to top off the night? I loved this little surprise for Danae at the end of an amazing wedding day. Bare feet and wedding dresses will always be perfect at a lake wedding!
